First time in an ambulance

Had my first trip in an ambulance this weekend. And it’s linked to bees again. Little bastards. I was doing my first Mountain Bike Race. The Mabalingwe Lion Man. 80km of dirt and sweat. At around 50km we stopped at the pub (Kalahari Oasis) used in the old Castrol adverts (Boet and Swaar). Kev bought 2 cokes for Leish, him and me to share. Bouncing them between us, sucking enthusiastically, and I get the last sip of the can with a frikkin bee in it. Stings my tongue and the same process as a month or so ago begins again. Swelling and waves of pain through my chest.

We get a lift down to the start, jump in the Ambulance and am taken through to a hospital in Bela Bela. This time, my breathing is affected, throwing the paramedic into a little bit of urgency as she phoned the hospital to let them know to have someone ready and waiting. That bit of news didn’t do my confidence too well.

Long story short, I was fine by the end of the day, having had my second run in within two months with a bee. Little bastards. I did have medication with me this time. A big help me thinks, and evidenced by a faster recovery.

So big lesson is to stop drinking out of cans.

Little buggers. Bees.

Feeling very bloody frustrated today. Yesterday, while riding with some mates along the river I got stung by a bee. On the inside of my ear. Guess that answers the question around whether I have big ears.

Anyway it was damn bloody sore. Leish managed to get the sting out, but not before it had burst in my body.

Everyone asked if I was allergic to bees? I didn’t know? I could only remember one other sting in my life and it was when I was a kid. As far as I knew, the answer was ‘no’.

Boy was I wrong. A few minutes later and my head wanted explode, my face had turned red, my already big ear was starting to swell, my chest felt increasingly tight, my lips felt like Angelina Joli’s.

Long story short, I ended up in Sandton Clinic, on a drip, and then spent the rest of the day in bed. Completely wiped out.

As my mate Kevin kept saying, such a little creature, such a lot of damage.

Little buggers. I am no longer their friends.
