Cheeki’s First Birthday Party. And Sadly, His Last

We got Cheeki just over a year ago. It didn’t take him long to become a very integral part of our family. We even had a cat, and the two of them roamed the house freely together. He’d shower with us, watch TV with us, play with us, and at times irritate the crap out of us : )

Last week he flew away. His wings had grown a little too long and before we could clip them, he took flight from the 4th floor balcony. He’d done it before, and we’d simply retrieved him from the trees below. But this time he flew out while we were away for the day. We arrived home to no Cheeki. And later were told a pack of Indian Miners had attacked him.

The video clip below is of his 1st birthday party we threw for him.

It’s a quieter sadder home we have at the moment : (

The Girl’s Gymnastics Display [video]

This past Friday and Saturday was Jordi and Carli’s Gymnastics Display. The culmination of all their work over the past year. It was a stunning performance from both of them.

Two shows on Friday and two on Saturday. An exhausting two days.

To top it off they both received their Central Gauteng Gymnastics Half-Colours.

Below are two short video clips of some of what they did. One for each of them. Carli’s first, and then Jordi’s.

Cheeki joins the family

Yesterday the girls and I went to Peter Bee Pets (if you haven’t been, you gotta go) to fetch the newest member of our family. His name is Cheeki, and he’s a Cockatiel. Wikipedia has this to say about him and his kind:

The Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus), also known as the Quarrion and the Weiro, is the smallest cockatoo endemic to Australia. They are prized as a household pet and companion parrot throughout the world and are relatively easy to breed. As a caged bird, cockatiels are second only in popularity to the Budgerigar.

Carli made a short video of Cheeki this morning. We posted it to YouTube, and it’s available with a click on the video below : )

If you’d like to see some pics of the girls with Cheeki, go here.

The challenge of multiple communication channels

One of the challenges the internet has created is an unthinkable number of channels through which to broadcast. Of course none of us make use of every channel, but there is always someone using a channel we’re not. And so if you want to communicate to them the days of taking the attitude of ‘you just come to us’ is over. Chances are, because they’re not engaging with your channel is that they don’t even know about you. And so if you want to find them, you’ve got to insert yourself into their space. It doesn’t end there, because each channel requires a different format for your content. You don’t just write an article or record a podcast and hope it translates easily into each space. No! You’ve got to take whatever you start with and continually adjust it to whatever context you’re going to post it to.

And if you’re like me, then you’ve got a headache just thinking about the ‘how’ of taking your message to as many platforms as possible. What I have learned is that the ability to do this is getting easier and easier (in terms of tools available), and the more I learn about new channels the more competent I feel and become in my distribution efforts.

With that as a pre-amble, let me tell you about my latest adventure….

I took the e-zine article (Five Practical Steps to Retain Talent) that I produce for TomorrowToday each month (it gets sent to around 11 000 people via e-mail), posted it onto our blog, built a short presentation and built a video PodCast. The video file was then uploaded to iTunes and YouTube.

I don’t know if this sounds like a lot to you? It exhausted me. Took me 1.5 days to work it all out, learn new skills and get it all to a place I was reasonably happy with. Of course next time around it’ll take far less time and in my experience always better quality.

Here’s the video below from YouTube.

Heineken Sting Quartet – Fabulous

Here’s a great way to get exposure in today’s over advertised world. Create your own event, shoot your own documentary, get the attention of some large News TV Networks, and you’ve done a fantastic job.

On the night of the October 21st the Real Madrid played Champions League match against AC Milan. Heineken convinced several university professors, girlfriends, and several bosses to convince their students, boyfriends and employees to go to a concert on that night. All of them couldnt say no and had to go to the classical concert.

Well worth a watch if you have 5 minutes.

Public Speaking Festival

Jordi competed in her school’s (Grayston Prep) Public Speaking Festival yesterday. Round one happened last week and 3 children from each class in Grade 4 and 5 were selected to go through to yesterday’s round.

Jordi put massive prep into her speech. She built it largely on her own. She wouldn’t take much, if any, advice from mom and dad. And she said it so many times in practice, that all of us at home know it off by heart : )

At yesterday’s festival three children were chosen for ‘speeches with potential’. Jordi was one of those three. She’s thrilled. We’re all thrilled. You’re amazing Jordi. Fantastically so.

Here’s her speech at the Festival. As you’ll see from the shakes in the clip, Leish was extremely nervous : )

Pool Jumping

Had some fun in the pool with the girls the other day. Just playing with the new vid camera. Still creates a massive rush when you take it under water. Your whole life you’re told not to take electronic equipment near water. Now we’ve got a video camera that goes in. It’s wild : )

Our Night of Camping

A couple of weeks ago our friends, the Blackburns, invited us for a night of camping with them to the Magaliesberg. A risk on their side, as we’re beginners in this area. They helped us gather together some equipment and we headed out on our adventure.

Was a great evening (hectic wind, some rain and all). The girls had a good time, and it was a good first step into this world together. Here’s a short vid of some of our stay. 3 sec bursts from the footage we took.

Or you can see the video on YouTube by following this link.

Today I turned 40

Today’s my birthday. I’m now officially a ‘ballie’ or so they tell me. 40 is the entry point to this new descriptor of me.

It’s been a kewl day. Surprised this morning with breakfast in bed, presents and lots of love from my family, and then through the day by friends, through sms, facebook, phone calls and twitter. So much love through so many platforms.

I started the day, once the girls had gone to school, with an 8km run. Had to remind myself I’m not too old. I then went to a web interview for The Times’ web site to be screened in Jan 2010. The cool thing was my outfit. Jordi and Carli dressed me in a tie and a badge / pin that said ’40 Today’. Not the usual attire, fer sure, but I was reminded throughout the day that I was 40 and still much adored by two very wonderful and special girls.

My (our) big present was a video camera. Water proof, solid state hard drive and truckloads of memory. The girls have gotten into YouTube so it’s going to be a blast for the next while. Of this I am certain.

I posted this morning’s clip to YouTube. Take a look…. Click on the video to be taken to the larger version, or click here

As London, from Disney Chanel would say, “Happy Birthday me” : )
